Off-cycle Elections Matter Too
After a few vivid reminders that personal events continue to have an impact even in a post-capitalist, evolving autocracy, pre-apocalyptic time, I am back with a renewed commitment to posting frequently. So much has happened in the past several months that I am not going to try to summarize or itimize all of them. Let’s just say that our political systems and the trajectory of our democracy are on the same slippery slope with a big pile of 💩waiting at the bottom.
So, what to focus on with so many dumpster fires burning? When I consider where to allocate my limited resources, I try to triage things and select the one that has the most severe, short-term impact. This is why I have been focusing my personal efforts on immigrant protection activities, because I feel that the actions of ICE, the border patrol, and the Supreme Court pose the most significant imminent risk to the freedom and lives of Americans than any of the other cacophony of ongoing threats. When someone who is a citizen, a green card holder, or an immigrant who is working through the system and has an upcoming immigration court date can be grabbed off the street, never to be seen again, it’s time for all hands on deck, imho.
All that said, I am seeing a threat looming that needs to be addressed, or the chances of us getting out of this mess will push the limits of zero: elections. Elections is a simple word, but in the current context, it is so loaded and has so many meanings that it’s hard to grasp, and I think that might be the point of much of what the MAGA/Republican/2025 folks have and are doing. There have been no credible examples of election fraud in the US in the past 30 years, with only 39 fraudulent votes found in a sample of 100,000,000. If you were to watch any of the mainstream media or take a stroll through the blogosphere, you would find many statements to the contrary. I think it is safe to say that the belief that elections are rife with fraud is many times higher than the actual rate of fraud. This discrepancy is setting the stage for a genuine ‘steal’ of an election as opposed to the imaginary one in 2020.
I will therefore be paying particular attention to how some of the high-profile elections this Tuesday are covered in the press. With the constant trial balloons about a third term for Agent Orange coming from what’s left of the White House, we need to be vocal in our peer groups in support of all election results, regardless of the winner. We can’t let this false narrative continue without a challenge, or democracy as we know it is dead.
I am especially curious about how Zohran Mandami‘s election as mayor of New York City will be covered and what crazy fearmongering will come from both the right and the left, because there is nothing like the election of a socialist Muslim to trigger any politician funded by capitalists and zionists into attack mode (looking at you, Chuck Schumer). The only way the myth of rampant election fraud wins is if the beleaguered guard of legacy democrats grabs onto it to try to maintain their hold on whatever power they have left. If they, in their death throes, start to shout fraud when they lose, all bets are off. I am eagerly awaiting hearing how Andrew Cuomo and the democratic party handle Zohran’s election, as I think it will give us a good indication of which path we are headed down.
